Savitri was a beautiful woman but she was also like a rishi or sage because she had the capacity to perform long meditations, fasting and prayer. When her father tried to find her a husband, most men were afraid to marry her because she was very powerful. Her father told her to choose her own husband!
Savitri chooses a man named Satyavan, the son of a king. The sage Narada tells Savitri's father that she has made a bad choice that Satyavan is destined to die in one year. Savitri is told to choose another husband but she refuses.
She marries Satyavan and lives with his family. Three days before Satyavan's predicted death, Savitri undergoes intense fasting, meditation and prayer to avert her husband's death. The Gods in heaven and humans on earth are so amazed at her devotion. Yamraj, the god of death appears before her to grant her any boon - except the life of her husband. Savitri tangles with Yamraj, the God of Death for some time, pleading, rationalizing with him, etc. Finally he agrees to give Satyvan his life back after he dies. Savitri accompanies Satyavan into the realm of death and then brings him back triumphant!
On this day in India, special rituals are undertaken and yagyas are performed for the long life of husbands and for happy marriage.
